Multinational law firm Pinsent Masons has been recognised in the Projects Deal of the Year category of the China Business Law Journal’s (CBLJ) Deals of the Year 2023 list for the firm’s work on the landmark NEOM Smart City Project in Saudi Arabia.

The NEOM project is one of the world’s largest and most complex transportation and public infrastructure projects, which is aiming to create a highly automated city utilising clean energy sources, such as solar and wind power. A number of Chinese state-owned contractors are bidding for various infrastructure projects within the project, including tunnels, dams, high-speed railways, renewable energy infrastructure and utilities.

The cross-border team, led by partners Mark Hu and Greg Jones, has provided contracts review, negotiation, and modification services to multiple Chinese state-owned contractors on this mega project.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Pinsent Masons has been recognised for its work on market-leading projects in the CBLJ’s Deals of the Year list.

Mark Hu said: “We are grateful to be recognised once again by CBLJ for our work on China outbound projects. We are proud to continue to work closely with Chinese contractors on these landmark projects, which are changing the way we think about modern cities. We remain committed to supporting our contractor clients on achieving the grand visions these projects undertake to bring to reality.”

Greg Jones said: “We are really grateful to have been entrusted by our clients to support them on their most challenging and landscape-changing infrastructure and energy projects. Our work on this drew on a cross-border team that covered much of the Pinsent Masons global platform and leveraging our extensive experience advising on projects on the largest of scales.”

This is the eighth consecutive year that the firm has been listed in the CBLJ’s Deals of the Year list. In previous years the firm has been recognised for its work on the Thar Block II coal mine in Pakistan, the Colombo Port City Project in Sri Lanka, the Hwange thermal power station in Zimbabwe, the Mozura wind farm in Montenegro, the railway and port PPP in Nigeria, MINOS solar power project in Greece, the Red Sea Tourism Mega Project in Saudi Arabia, Mexico City’s subway modernization project, integrated stainless steel plant in Indonesia, and most recently EV-manufacturing complex in Saudi Arabia and 1000MW wind projects in Uzbekistan.

The Deals of the Year list recognises deals based on overall significance, complexity and innovative nature of the deals and cases, while also taking into account the deal size and broader interests
